Artificial Intelligence at CeBIT 2017: When will machines outstrip the intelligence of humans? 2017.03.25

Hannover, Germany - CeBIT 2017, 20 - 24 March - IT specialists are already speculating on the day when machines will become more intelligent than people. Indeed, there is no doubt that digital applications are becoming increasingly complex and ever more capable. In the United States, artificial intelligence (AI) is already being used to fashion legal documents, and doctors are using AI as an aid in the support of diagnosis and treatment. Whether the digital assistant Is called Siri, Cortana or Echo, a measure of artificial intelligence is always involved. At CeBIT visitors can see how the unlimited opportunities offered by AI translate into new business prospects.

Smart New World

Autonomous driving is already a reality, and the big breakthrough to the consumer segment seemingly imminent.

But Artificial Intelligence can do much more than just drive cars.

Computers help hire employees and robots help our children with their homework.

So what's left for us to do?

Machines once just handled heavy physical tasks.

Now they're helping us think.

The areas in which research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been conducted are as fascinating as they are numerous.

The military wants to use robots to help save soldiers' lives.

Voice recognition software in our smartphones writes text messages for us when we dictate them.

They are even able to learn, such as correct spellings of words they don't know.

The German National Academy of Science and Engineering is at CeBIT 2017 with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence to launch a free, three-week online course that provides a well-founded overview of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key technology for digitalization.

Robots and AI in medicine

In the field of medicine, computers are being fed enormous volumes of data to better classify doctor's findings — such as for the detection of tumor cells.

Young cancer cells that are almost impossible for the human eye to detect can be detected in mere seconds by AI.

The software compares data and findings from thousands of patients and physicians the world over.

This puts the AI in a position to create a diagnosis even during early stages of the illness, which significantly increases the patient's chances of recovery.

Under control: Using IoT connectivity and the latest tech, ZTE’s SmartCity 3.0 keeps track of everything that goes on.

Another example: There are now apps that can tell by listening to the user's voice whether that person might suffer from Parkinson's later in life — or not.

AI as a job killer?

The flip side of AI: more and more jobs appear to be likely to be taken over by robots in the next ten to 30 years.

The receptionist in a hotel foyer could well soon be replaced by an AI robot.

Bank consultants are also threatened in the medium term.

Software based on best practices for investing already exist and deploy intelligent behavior to learn and process much more information than any human can.

As such, artificial intelligent makes better investment decisions possible.

Our Future with AI

Many applications sound like they came from a science-fiction novel.

What's clear is this: AI is still far away from any 'universal' intelligence.

Based on the current state of the art, it seems like a Utopian hope that robots will be able to understand emotion.

But not an impossibility.

As far as professional life is concerned, there will be more than enough for people to do in the future.

Artificial intelligence  will increasingly take over simple forms of work.

Yet in the creative segment, as well as architecture, design and engineering, AI is far from becoming a viable alternative.

Artificial Intelligence will improve our lives.

And increasingly eliminate certain mental tasks.

It will provide us more space for tasks that bring joy.

And will revolutionize the working world.

CeBIT will show how the boundless opportunities and possibilities of Artificial Intelligence can be realized in your concrete business.

Learn the way machines learn

The German National Academy of Science and Engineering is at CeBIT 2017 with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence to launch a free, three-week online course that provides a well-founded overview of artificial intelligence (AI) as a key technology for digitalization.

It’s not just Amazon’s Alexa that is making artificial intelligence (AI) part and parcel of our daily lives.

Whether voice assistance systems or the rapidly growing list of autopilot functions in state-of-the-art vehicles – AI is always there in the background.

However, getting to this point has required a paradigm shift.

Today, instead of every knowledge processing step being manually coded, machine learning methods are programmed.

These methods help the systems to identify the structures in our world independently and continuously grow their knowledge base.

This type of machine learning has already become established in many application areas for speech processing and image and object recognition and is becoming increasingly important for digitalization in business and wider society.

That is why the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) is at CeBIT 2017 in Hannover to offer a clear overview of this key digitalization technology.

But that’s not all, acatech is also extending a very special offer.

On 20 March, acatech and its partners at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) are launching a three-week online course that anyone can take part in for free.

Over the three weeks, scientists, business experts, researchers and users will guide participants through machine learning methods and define tools and application areas.

Using specific examples from areas such as the automotive industry, the healthcare sector and retail, the course will also highlight the problems that can already be resolved with the aid of machine learning.

Volkswagen's Latest Project: The AI Car

"The next three or four years will be decisive," says Chief Digital Officer at Volkswagen Johann Jungwirth on the reinvention of the car.

At the CeBIT Global Conferences, he explained what VW is working on and what role artificial intelligence will play for the car of tomorrow.

Let's start with what Jungwirth did NOT speak about at the Sakura Stage in Hall 8: alternative engines.

That was it really.

Instead, the Volkswagen CDO showed, in fast-forward, how the corporation is digitizing its core business.

The key term here was artificial intelligence
.

"AI is everywhere and it will take on a central role in the car of the future," states Jungwirth.

No one expects it to replace humans, but to complement us where it can – in the dashboard, for example.
"Today you have to push seven or eight buttons before you find what you're looking for on the in-car entertainment system. We want to reduce that number to one – if not zero."

With this, he means to say that our voices and gestures will come to control far more than just the sat nav.

The car recognizes its driver's expressions, mood, and destination.

By monitoring location data and road behavior, the user experience adapts to each specific situation.

Self-Driving Cars Right to Your Door

"The engine used to represent the heart of a car, but the autonomous driving system will soon take over."

AI is of course central here as well.

The self-driving car is expected to make transport safer, preventing over a million traffic-related deaths a year.

It should make parking easier, too.

The revenue for artificial intelligence is expected to grow by 92% this year alone.

According to Jungwirth, we waste a third of our time in cars looking for parking spots.

The autonomous vehicle would solve this problem by dropping the passenger off at their front door before finding a place to park by itself.

It could then be summoned back at the touch of a button.

And discussions on parking didn't end there. Huge car parks have long been required in highly-developed cities.

But Jungwirth claims that in a couple of years only a seventh of these will be necessary.

This is because fewer people will be buying cars, with the preference shifting towards using them only on demand.

"For 96 percent of the time, cars just sit there," states Jungwirth.

An autonomous shared vehicle would be almost permanently in motion, dropping one passenger off and immediately locating the next – like a self-driving taxi.

VW is the first company to develop this kind of mobility concept – which it has given the working title "Sedric" (self-driving car).

Will it remain just a concept?

Yes, most likely.

But a whole host of Sedric-inspired ideas will undoubtedly become reality – perhaps even in the next three to four years.
