Towards an all-inclusive society where people can "travel more freely"

The expected influx of foreign visitors coming to Japan due to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics requires urgent response.

According to the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO), visitors that have just arrived in Japan typically use paper-based information such as guidebooks, or JNTO and travel agency websites, forums, and social networks to gather information.

90% of the visitors have devices that can connect to the internet, and there is data that shows that they use those devices for everyday communication during their stay.

How can we make travel within Japan smoother for these visitors?

One answer comes from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which suggests improvements to the English road signs.

For example, to make it easier to say "Roppongi Dori" perhaps to a taxi driver, the use of "Roppongi Dori Ave." is being suggested to make it easier to understand the meaning as well.

Another example is the "The National Diet" which was written as "Kokkai" until now.

Of course, the goal doesn't end at the Olympics, but the ultimate vision is to create a society that tailors to foreign visitors but also to the elderly and handicapped people  already living in Japan even after the Olympics.

The goal is "the creation of an all-inclusive society", where everyone in the society can get around without restriction, and no one is left out.

In the 2014 "Promotion Committee for Pedestrian Movement Support Using ICT" discussion, data on foreign visitors in Japan was made public, as a way to aid an improvement of services for visitors.

In January 2014, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and Tokai Bureau of Telecommunications aided a "Shoryudo Project" which aimed to increase foreign visitors to the Chubu and Hokuriku regions.

The Ministry is working to help increase Wi-Fi hotspots as well as provide multilingual support in tourist facilities and accommodations.

Similarly, in Toyota City of Aichi Prefecture, a project called "Smart Melit (Smart Mobility & Energy Life in Toyota City)" is being conducted since November 2014 which is creating an infrastructure centered around EVs, PHVs, FCVs.

Utilizing ITS technology and providing a smart community foundation, Toyota City is aiming to become the "the world's best mutual community for cars and people".

It is an attempt to create an all-inclusive society that allows anyone to move around freely, providing information about major roads and tourist information through ITS spots, and a system that allows access to information with QR codes.

Station Core, a representation of a train station in a future city at SMC, will show the newest technology in personal mobility solutions at the "Personal Mobility Lab" exhibition.

Please experience the "future of communication between cars and people" at the exhibit, displaying the utilization of ICT, multilingual support, support and safety for the elderly and handicapped, all aimed at the internationalization of Japan by the year 2020.

On the theme for this project as "With more freedom... change for cars, change for lifestyles, change for society." the "Conferences" program will have an international symposium as a space for discussions, gathering experts from Japan and abroad, technical seminars by exhibitors, and workshops for children.

Through these three programs, we aim for the wide array of visitors coming to the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015 to have a comprehensive experience while having fun in the world of "Smart Mobility City."

Pioneer Corporation

"At this year's event, visitors will be able to experience controlling various types of information while driving in our driving simulator set up with the next-generation IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) cockpit-type mockup.

Until now, there were many restrictions to what drivers could do while driving.
However, with the use of smartphones and cloud-based technologies from our company, users are freed from those restrictions, and able to easily interact with information.

Our exhibition allows you to experience this type of futuristic driving," explains Product Systems Business Strategy Department Lead Planning Division Director, Manabu Shimodaira.
Of course, what lies ahead of this next-generation IVI system is Pioneer's goal of creating products that are utilized worldwide.

IR-Public Relations Department Public Relations Division Vice Secretary, Hiromitsu Kimura talks about the SMC exhibition, saying "Pioneer is accumulating technology and know-how for connected cars of the near future and automated driving of the future. We would like people to experience the futuristic value of this work we have put in".

The technology that you will experience in the driving simulator at the SMC exhibition will drastically impact automated driving technology in the future.

"We hope to make automated driving even more attractive for users, and we plan to support various automakers as well," says Mr. Kimura.

Please experience the "Future value of automated driving" from Pioneer at their booth.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. looks to provide "the enjoyment of free movement, and the realization of the sustainable society," and proposing ways for people to go where they want, when they want, and how they want.
Naohiro Maeda from the Community Planning Department explains mobility vehicles' roles in the future, saying that "mobility vehicles will become more than just a way to transport people; it will also become a vehicle for transporting energy and information. I believe it will provide a future lifestyle that allows for more connections".

Photo courtesy of the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015

In order to achieve this, Honda will contribute to society through "creating, using, and connecting".
"Creating" means creating energy.
Honda will propose things such as smart hydrogen stations that converts renewable energy to hydrogen, or mobility solutions with electric motors, such as electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
"Using" means reducing CO2 emissions from using mobility vehicles, or using renewable energy.
"Connecting" means connecting mobility solutions to buildings to use it as a battery or a generator.
By utilizing these technologies, Honda hopes to promote building a smarter community.

In order to display that worldview, "at this year's SMC2015 we are not displaying one single product or technology, but instead presenting the scenes in which those technologies may be used. We also want to propose solutions to energy problems in various places," says Mr. Maeda.

The anticipation doesn't end at mobility, but also for SMC2015 which proposes a lifestyle and society of the future.
"By participating in SMC2015, I hope many visitors will be able to be thrilled and excited about the future. I am also anticipating it to be a place to propose a new society through cars".

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

"Nissan believes that there are 4 major societal problems with motorization; energy, global warming, accidents, and traffic congestion," says Hiroki Nagayama, Deputy General Manager, Technology Planning Department, Nissan Motor Company Co., Ltd.
Further, "in order to deal with these issues, Nissan is committed to its Zero Emission strategy and reducing traffic accidents as well as congestion in cities".

Photo courtesy of the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015

Nissan
has been electrifying its cars and implementing intelligence as a way to achieve these goals.
Nissan already has products that integrate these technologies, and electric cars and cars with automatic braking technology are proving to be popular around the world.
These technologies are sure to continue expanding all over the globe.

With that in mind, Nissan is displaying its electrified and smarter vehicles at  SMC2015 through a "Car Society of the Near Future" theater.
The company hopes to share a vision of the future where electric mobility vehicles and automated driving vehicles are on the road.

"Our company is extremely excited that the many companies and visitors can experience how society will change in the future, at the number one technology motor show," says Mr. Nagayama.
The company hopes to answer the questions, "What does Nissan think of the future of cars and society?" and "How will Nissan affect the future of cars and society?" at their booth.
"I hope that as many people as possible will be able to share and understand the future Nissan envisions through our exhibition demos and theater".

Toyota Motor Corporation

One of the features that Toyota believes will add value is reducing traffic accidents through the use of a "Collaborative ITS".
"Collaborative ITS is a system that connects cars to the infrastructure on traffic signals and allows them to communicate. The system will check for pedestrians and cars in the other lane when turning left, and will alert the driver if necessary," explains Akio Yamamoto, General Manger, ITS Planning Division.

Photo courtesy of the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015

The second type of added value is allowing freer movement.
The company is currently testing its mobility sharing "Ha:mo" system that allows people to ride it anytime they want.
"'Ha:mo' is a "last-mile mobility" for easier transportation for everyone including seniors. We plan to continue demonstrative testing in more areas."

By implementing collaborative ITS around the world, the technology will likely see further improvements.
In addition, Ha:mo has a great chance of succeeding in areas in Europe with strict traffic regulations, as a practical micro mobility sharing service.

Finally, Mr. Yamamoto expressed his thoughts for the company's SMC2015 exhibit, explaining that "Toyota hopes to connect its cars to a good city and a good society, and contribute to society by creating added value. A smart mobility society is extremely important to us, and a society that we believe we can succeed in".

Mazda Motor Corporation

In 2007, Mazda announced its long-term technology development strategy, called the "Sustainable 'Zoom-Zoom' Declaration".
The main policies of the declaration were to provide "joy of driving" and "advanced environmental and safety features".
"The main point of safety was the way of thinking called 'Mazda Proactive Safety'. Safe driving is provided by supporting the driver's cognition, decision making and control, while at the same time providing an enjoyable driving experience," explains Masayuki Motohashi, General Manager, Technology Planning Department, Mazda Product Strategy Division.

Photo courtesy of the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015

The Mazda CX-5 on display at the booth is developed with this way of thinking.
It is easy to see all of the features packed into the vehicle to support safety, such as great visibility, side mirrors that allow you to see even small children, a controller that allows drivers to control the infotainment system with as little distraction as possible, and expanded legroom.
"Mazda's self-developed advanced safety system 'i-ACTIVSENSE' that has been utilized since 2013 is also on display at the booth".

People are placed at the center when developing Mazda Proactive Safety automated driving technologies, and Mazda trusts and respects the drivers.
The automated driving system will allow the driver to experience the excitement of driving, only stepping in when it senses danger, and determines the driver cannot avoid the danger.

He explained his excitement for the event, saying "I hope people will be able to see and understand Mazda's safety ideology, our technology and cars that utilize those technologies at our booth in SMART MOBILITY CITY 2015".

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will present an image of a living room that combines the 3 types of electricity: electricity from power companies, natural energy from solar panels, and stored electricity from batteries in electric vehicles.

The exhibit will recreate the flow of energy in the day in the life of a household with an electric vehicle.
More specifically it will show how energy collected from solar panels during the day, and low-cost energy stored during the night is stored in the battery of the Outlander PHEV.

Households will be able to use electricity more economically and effectively by using this system called "V2H" (Vehicle to Home), allowing electric vehicles to connect to homes and provide energy throughout the home.

Photo courtesy of the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015

Wataru Matsuoka, Assistant Manager of the Engineering Strategy Department E-Mobility Business Office
explains that, "in recent years, V2H has gained popularity as a way for the environmentally conscious and as a way to prepare for natural disasters. The vehicles are able to provide electricity to homes during power outages, and store lower-cost energy during the night to allow for load shifting. In addition, unreliable natural energy such as solar energy can be used more reliably by combining it with batteries".

He states that V2H is necessary to use renewable energy to its full extent.
There are additional benefits by using extensions of V2H such as V2B (Vehicle to Building) and V2C (Vehicle to Community) systems.

"Even in Germany where solar energy is more common, there is a lot of interest in V2H technology. Using energy from parked vehicles is a big area for expansion, and our company is planning to be heavily involved in this area".

Learn more about effective uses of clean energy at the booth, which will explain the V2H technology in a way that is easy for everyone to understand.
