Coupe crossovers are a burgeoning segment, with every automaker striving to fill the niche with their own interpretation.

Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury arm, is also throwing its hat in the ring with the QX30 concept, a precursor of a new premium compact crossover anticipated to make its production debut next year.

Measuring 4430mm long, 1815mm wide and 1520mm high, concept has a 192mm ground clearance, 39mm lower than that of the Porsche Macan.

The sloping coupe lines are also more pronounced, juxtaposed with robust facets and Infiniti’s signature sweep in the rear section of the DLO.

Combining the sleek profile of a coupe with the command seating and all-wheel drive of a crossover SUV, the QX30 was designed by an international team to appeal to global customers who are less likely to follow tradition.

Its bold design is accentuated by a high shoulder that pulls out from the body with negative surfaces beneath – it’s a design element that we’ve seen on other Infiniti branded concepts before, and a matured interpretation of the ‘flame surfacing’ coined by marketing people at BMW during former design director Chris Bangle’s tenure.

“The QX30 Concept design conveys a gritty sense of durability but tough doesn’t mean rough,” says Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti’s executive design director.
“We’ve retained a sense of artistry throughout, even in the most functional of parts.”

To complement the higher stance, Infiniti designers have added visual cues that widen the body and make the car look more robust on its 21-inch wheels, which are made from three-dimensional milled aluminum and matte rubber material.

The theme of rugged sophistication is continued through the satin chrome front bumper through to the blue-tinted carbon fiber underscoring the vehicle’s body in side view, while sculpted skid plates front and rear further demarcate the car’s go-anywhere aesthetic.

Inside, the bold and dark environment harmonizes with the outdoors appeal of the exterior.

All four seats have been streamlined for a suspended look – the U-shaped seat frame is partially wrapped with a layer of premium Connolly saddle leather offset by blue stitching.

The contrast between the exposed and covered parts of the frame lends a three-dimensional quality to the interior.

The IP features blue suede as a divider between the upper and lower sections.
Its rough cut is denotes the craftsmanship and artistry designers sought to imbue upon the concept’s contrasting materials.

Meanwhile the quilted leather upper of the door panels and on the seats is a nod to high-end luxury – it’s an element typically seen on Bentley’s models.

The intricate leather weave pattern in the carpet adds texture to the cabin while the bright blue backing underneath supplements subtle touches of color to the dominantly brown environment.

It’s an expressive treatment for an area that is often untouched by designers, reflecting the creativity of the company’s design team and their artistic incline.

Infiniti has shown a large number of concept cars in recent times.

The first to showcase its new design direction was the Essence concept, a potential two-door flagship for the brand, which was shown at the 2009 Geneva motor show.

Since then we’ve seen the Etherea (2011), Emerg-e and LE (2012), Q30 (2013), Q80 and Q60 concepts.

Though last year’s Infiniti Q80 Inspiration concept was less of a statement of intent than a showcase for the brand’s design language – which now appears to have a very clear and consistent direction – the Q30 concept shown in Frankfurt in 2013 signaled the brand’s intentions to enter the premium compact segment.

“The Q30 concept was like a panther, lithe and slender. We transformed the QX30 concept into a mountain lion, strong and muscular,” said Albaisa.

Infiniti will come to the fore with both vehicles in the near future; offering buyers two different takes on the coupe crossover to choose from.

Forecasters predict that Gen X and Gen Y will represent about 80 percent of buyers in the premium compact segment by the end of this decade, with research showing an increasing rejection of traditional notions toward premium cars among this new generation of buyers.

Their idea of a premium car has less to do with size or power but more to do with distinctive design, which the QX30 concept delivers in spades.

The QX30 concept – and the Q60 sport coupe concept making its European debut in Geneva – is expected to become available at dealerships with only minor revisions.

And that is a very good thing.
