Big Apple’s Auto Show Fortified with NVIDIA-Powered Audis, BMWs, Rolls

New Yorkers are a tough crowd. They demand the best food.
They’re the most uncompromising fans in professional sports.
They’ve got the roughest media.

So if automakers are talking about the tech they’ve built into their latest cars and trucks to this crowd, they know they’ve got the goods.
That’s just what they’re doing at the New York International Auto Show – which opens to the public today at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center.

This is a show that’s packed with cars that would have seemed like science fiction just a few years ago – and much of it’s powered by our technology.

Take the new Audi A3, one of the show’s highlights.

Audi grabbed the 2014 World Car of the Year Award for a lineup of compact cars that makes technology a highlight in a class better known for its lack of sophistication.

All Audi’s A3 models — ranging from a four-door sedan to the performance-oriented S3 two-door — are available with Audi’s MMI Navigation system, powered by NVIDIA Tegra processor.

There’s more to this story than what you’ll find in the showroom – or in the auto show.

Based on the NVIDIA Tegra Visual Computing Module, Audi’s infotainment system can be upgraded at a faster pace than traditional infotainment systems, giving customers the most up-to-date hardware when new cars go on sale each year.

BMW was also a winner with its new i3, taking both the World Green Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year awards.

This emission-free electric car sets a new benchmark for urban transportation, thanks to its natural and recycled materials, efficient manufacturing processes, and available driver assist technologies.

In the i3, our Tegra processors power an available navigation system featuring dynamic 3D maps that make it quicker and easier for drivers to find their way.

Our technologies helped build the car, too: BMW’s engineers used our Quadro graphics cards to hone the i3’s futuristic looks, which are grabbing attention wherever the car goes.

Of course being an auto show, there are a few favorites that aren’t within reach for most of us, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love thinking about getting some time behind the wheel.

For that, check out the new Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II and the Audi RS7 Dynamic Edition.

In the Ghost II, Rolls-Royce is fitting a car that evokes motoring’s golden age with the latest technology, including a transmission guided by satellite information, as well as its new Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller, which controls an NVIDIA-powered infotainment system.

You’ll find more NVIDIA technology in the Audi RS7, a performance enthusiast’s dream with 560-horsepower, Quattro all-wheel drive, 21-inch wheels, and bespoke exterior and interior features.

It’s fast and beautiful.

In addition to these show stoppers, visitors will be treated to fresh faces for some of their favorites, like the Toyota Camry and Ford Focus, along with special editions marking historical milestones, such as Ford’s Mustang 50 Years Edition, Dodge’s Challenger Scat Pack and Mazda’s 25th anniversary Miata.

Danny Shapiro is NVIDIA’s Senior Director of Automotive, focusing on solutions that enable faster and better design of automobiles, as well as in-vehicle solutions for infotainment, navigation and driver assistance.

He's a 25-year veteran of the computer graphics and semiconductor industries, and has been with NVIDIA since 2009.

Prior to NVIDIA, Danny served in marketing, business development and engineering roles at ATI, 3Dlabs, Silicon Graphics and Digital Equipment.

He holds a BSE in electrical engineering and computer science from Princeton University and an MBA from the Hass School of Business at UC Berkeley.

He lives in Northern California, where his home solar panel system charges his electric car.
