He described the next challenge as working with the IT industry to make mobility more intelligent.
A first step in this direction is the implementation of fast LTE wireless data communication capability in vehicles.
One of Vodafone’s exhibits at CeBIT was a “global SIM”, operating reliably at temperatures from minus 40 to plus 85 degrees Celsius.
Another big idea for the future was an “Industry 4.0” project (equivalent to “Advanced Manufacturing” in the U.S.) implemented by Microsoft in partnership with Krones AG, a major manufacturer of process, filling and packaging systems for the beverage industry.

This design concept illustrated the opportunities arising from the horizontal and vertical integration of people and machines.
A further drawing card at CeBIT was an SAP app used to compile training data from members of the German national soccer team, and to help the team in its preparations for the World Cup in Brazil.
The players’ socks are fitted with special data-recording sensors.
Team manager Oliver Bierhoff attended the Hannover event to present the smartphone app used to display the players’ strengths and weaknesses.
Networking technology is also being used to make travel more convenient and less subject to mishaps, as demonstrated at the Deutsche Telekom stand with its Bag2Go tracking solution.

The owner of one of the smart suitcases developed by T-Systems, Airbus and RIMOWA can run an app to check out its location at any time, thanks to a Wi-Fi chip and GPS tracker fitted to the bag.
Biggest-ever selection of new security solutions
Over 500 businesses used the leading global IT tradeshow to profile their new security solutions, more than ever before.
Exhibitors included a host of leading names such as ESET, Kaspersky Lab, Secusmart and Trend Micro.

The increasing focus on the protection of sensitive data is boosting the market share of biometric identification processes.
Fujitsu’s display at CeBIT featured an “Ultrabook” with a hand vein scanner, and DERMALOG launched what is said to be the world’s smallest optical fingerprint scanner.
The device measures just 29 x 43 millimeters.
Startups ready for action: CeBIT 2014 most youthful ever
More than 300 recently established companies – more than ever before – were at the tradeshow to present their products and services, including 50 as entrants in the CODE_n startups competition, under the “big data” lead theme.
One of the standout entries was the “streetspotr project”, which creates a community that instantly becomes Europe’s largest smartphone workforce, able to complete major projects at multiple locations.

Many more innovations were on display in Planet Reseller, with more than 230 exhibitors taking part.
World’s largest IT laboratory: Spotlight on artificial intelligence
One of the most fascinating attractions at any CeBIT consists of getting a glimpse behind the scenes of universities and research institutions, and this year was no exception.
The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) was there to demonstrate the benefits of robots with flexible spinal columns and feet equipped with sensors.
|

|
Another eye-catcher involved the world’s largest “school” of autonomous underwater robots, consisting of 20 submarines.
Researchers from the Artificial Life Lab at the University of Graz, as well as several other universities, drew their inspiration from social insects like ants or bees.
These underwater robots communicate by means of “blue light”, electrical potential fields and sound and radio waves.
Similar special fleets will soon be able to seek out toxic waste or sunken objects.
