Hannover, Germany - March 14, 2014

This year's CeBIT further sharpened its profile as the world’s leading IT event for decision-makers.

The keynote themes season were Datability and Security.

Big data and Industry 4.0: Data becomes 21st century's raw material

“Big data” was a common thread running through CeBIT 2014.

The vast range of apps on display highlighted the enormous opportunities awaiting all sectors of the economy from harnessing today’s rapidly growing volumes of data.

Big data is about to make a breakthrough in Germany, as elsewhere, according to a survey conducted by the BITKOM high-tech association.

Almost one in every 10 businesses is already using big data solutions, according to this survey, and another 31 percent have firm plans to do so.

This year’s CeBIT offered numerous practical illustrations of the huge opportunities arising from the analysis of data flows.

Software AG and other companies exhibited solutions that allow businesses to keep pace with the incredible growth in data volumes associated with the Internet of Things.

This requires ultra-fast software architectures (intelligent business operations).

The automotive sector has already established itself as a key player in the booming market for machine-to-machine communications.

Accordingly CeBIT is becoming an increasingly important event for automakers.

The Volkswagen Group showcased its design concepts for the IT future of the automotive industry on more than 900 square meters of exhibition space.

A standout example was the Audi simulation model “James 2025”, with a virtual cockpit illustrating what the experience of piloted driving (autonomous driving) might look like in just a few years’ time.

“Our cars are already computing centers on wheels, with 1.5 kilometers of wiring, more than 50 control devices and the computing power of 20 state-of-the-art PCs,”
Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn declared at CeBIT.

He described the next challenge as working with the IT industry to make mobility more intelligent.

A first step in this direction is the implementation of fast LTE wireless data communication capability in vehicles.

One of Vodafone’s exhibits at CeBIT was a “global SIM”, operating reliably at temperatures from minus 40 to plus 85 degrees Celsius.

Another big idea for the future was an “Industry 4.0” project (equivalent to “Advanced Manufacturing” in the U.S.) implemented by Microsoft in partnership with Krones AG, a major manufacturer of process, filling and packaging systems for the beverage industry.

This design concept illustrated the opportunities arising from the horizontal and vertical integration of people and machines.

A further drawing card at CeBIT was an SAP app used to compile training data from members of the German national soccer team, and to help the team in its preparations for the World Cup in Brazil.

The players’ socks are fitted with special data-recording sensors.

Team manager Oliver Bierhoff attended the Hannover event to present the smartphone app used to display the players’ strengths and weaknesses.

Networking technology is also being used to make travel more convenient and less subject to mishaps, as demonstrated at the Deutsche Telekom stand with its Bag2Go tracking solution.

The owner of one of the smart suitcases developed by T-Systems, Airbus and RIMOWA can run an app to check out its location at any time, thanks to a Wi-Fi chip and GPS tracker fitted to the bag.

Biggest-ever selection of new security solutions

Over 500 businesses used the leading global IT tradeshow to profile their new security solutions, more than ever before.

Exhibitors included a host of leading names such as ESET, Kaspersky Lab, Secusmart and Trend Micro.

The security solutions on display ranged from sophisticated end-to-end encryption and high-security smartphones, such as Secusmart's “Chancellor Phone”, to new anti-virus programs for smartphones and tablets.

Such protection is urgently needed, given the increasing trend towards the use of devices, programs and services both at work and at home (bring your own device).

This trend was well-represented at CeBIT, including mobile phone apps for encrypting voice and text messages.

This is done by exchanging temporary encryption codes between two devices which have the security app installed on them.

The increasing focus on the protection of sensitive data is boosting the market share of biometric identification processes.

Fujitsu’s display at CeBIT featured an “Ultrabook” with a hand vein scanner, and DERMALOG launched what is said to be the world’s smallest optical fingerprint scanner.
The device measures just 29 x 43 millimeters.

Startups ready for action: CeBIT 2014 most youthful ever

More than 300 recently established companies – more than ever before – were at the tradeshow to present their products and services, including 50 as entrants in the CODE_n startups competition, under the “big data” lead theme.

One of the standout entries was the “streetspotr project”, which creates a community that instantly becomes Europe’s largest smartphone workforce, able to complete major projects at multiple locations.

The Munich-based startup Cosinuss presented the first heartbeat monitor fitted in the user’s ear, naturally with transmission to a smartphone via Bluetooth.

The CODE_n Award for the best startup for up 2014 was presented on Wednesday evening to the London firm Viewsy.

It carried the day with a big data solution for retailers, capable of measuring and analyzing customer traffic in order to improve the level of customer services.

As this year's official Partner Country, the impressive innovative capacities of the UK were also at the forefront during CeBIT, with young British entrepreneurs presenting their solutions at the Partner Country pavilion in Hall 6.

And because startups can only make their breakthrough into the big time with the support of investors, the Lower Saxony State Minister of Economic Affairs, Olaf Lies, and more than 120 investors were at the space:d showcase (Stand H 50) to meet and greet selected startups.

An opportunity not to be missed for younger people interested in a career in IT was a visit to the "job and career” center at CeBIT.

While they were there, they also had a chance to try out Apple’s new iBeacon technology.

eGovernment: Future border controls and democracy to be sourced from the Cloud

In Public Sector Parc, CeBIT featured a wide range of current and future IT solutions for the government sector, at the federal, state and municipal levels.

The German Federal Printing Office ( Bundesdruckerei ) introduced a design concept for a future ultra-efficient border control procedure with the highest security levels.

Its Full ID | Border Solution combines the latest eGate technology with intelligent control and monitoring systems via tablet or mobile phone.

A much talked-about CeBIT exhibit illustrating progress towards Democracy 2.0 was the “Bürger Cloud” (Citizens’ Cloud) solution from security specialist ecsec, designed for Internet-based referendums.

One of the requirements for such polls is likely to be an electronic ID document, and interested voters would be able to download information on the issue from the Cloud.

Brand new smartphones, tablets and gadgets

Trade visitors mainly interested in hardware also got their money’s worth.

Samsung’s new top-of-the-line smartphone Galaxy S5 celebrated its German market launch at CeBIT, and the new business tablets from Samsung, HUAWEI and Nokia also attracted ample attention in the halls.

The security specialist secunet featured its new, high-security SINA tablet, based on the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 model.

Online electronics retailer Pearl came to CeBIT with its new simvalley MOBILE smartwatch GW-420, a smartphone worn on the wrist with hands-free functionality and Web connectivity.

The Chinese exhibitor Yifang Digital Technologies was also displaying an Android smartwatch.

Many more innovations were on display in Planet Reseller, with more than 230 exhibitors taking part.

World’s largest IT laboratory: Spotlight on artificial intelligence

One of the most fascinating attractions at any CeBIT consists of getting a glimpse behind the scenes of universities and research institutions, and this year was no exception.

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) was there to demonstrate the benefits of robots with flexible spinal columns and feet equipped with sensors.

Another eye-catcher involved the world’s largest “school” of autonomous underwater robots, consisting of 20 submarines.

Researchers from the Artificial Life Lab at the University of Graz, as well as several other universities, drew their inspiration from social insects like ants or bees.

These underwater robots communicate by means of “blue light”, electrical potential fields and sound and radio waves.

Similar special fleets will soon be able to seek out toxic waste or sunken objects.

In response to the increasing problem of data theft from machines and production networks, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Communications Technology (SIT) presented Industry 4.0 security tools which encrypt manufacturing data right when it is generated, providing a secure transport channel for computers and machines.

Augmented reality was the focus of another debut from DFKI and the software cluster.

Given the imminent transformation of agricultural machines into agricultural control units with GPS, touch controls and sensors, the researchers presented innovative augmented reality repair manuals.

The manual content is integrated into the user’s field of vision via a head-mounted display, with clear explanations of each step in the process.

With this exhibit CeBIT made the point that even the agricultural sector is about to become much more reliant on state-of-the-art IT systems.
