Geneva, Switzerland - March 07, 2014 - The T-ROC concept is Volkswagen dipping it's toe in the water to gauge public reaction to a Golf-sized SUV. Following on CrossBlue, CrossBlue Coupé and Taigun concept cars, the T-ROC concept is a preview for a compact six-passenger SUV model. Based on Volkswagen's adaptable MQB platform - which also underpins the seventh generation Golf as well as the new Audi TT - the two-door targa-topped concept is well proportioned, with minimal overhangs, a relatively long wheelbase (2595mm) and compact overall length (4179mm). Thanks to the platform lightweight qualities, the concept weighs in at just 1420kg (3131 lbs.).

“We want to build this car,” says Volkswagen design director Klaus Bischoff.
“We will have it in a five-door version.”

Based on Volkswagen’s adaptable MQB platform - which also underpins the seventh generation Golf as well as the new Audi TT - the two-door targa-topped concept is well proportioned, with minimal overhangs, a relatively long wheelbase (2595mm) and compact overall length (4179mm).

The front face of the car is characterized by a wide grille element that incorporates the LED projector lamps, which are devoid of a typical cover.
The front and rear ends of the car incorporate foglights housed in a ring-shaped bezel, which also includes cameras and reverse lights at the rear. Images from these cameras are displayed on the inside rearview mirror, allowing users to see obstacles in the path when driving off-road.

The T-ROC concept also showcases more sculptural approach to Volkswagen’s clean design aesthetic, as seen in the hood surfacing, more pronounced wheelarch design and shoulderline accent toward the rear.

“Every line is following a certain rhythm and graphical content,” says Bischoff.
“Though we stay true to ourselves we’re giving the design a new dimension and emotional approach.”

Ultimately the roof of the production model will be a little higher than it is on the T-ROC concept.
Here, designers have cleverly employed a chrome strip underneath the roof’s cant rail rather than around the windows. It does well to mask the overall height of the roof and make the car appear visually lower.
Adding to its show car aesthetic, the middle section of the roof consists of two halves that can be removed and stowed in the trunk.

Inside, the T-ROC concept explores a new design aesthetic and technologies for future Volkswagen products.
Materials that combine leather and cloth join a new gradient color schemes that turn from blue to dark black, adding a more product design-oriented design language to the environment.

The entire control system is operated via a center touchscreen and, as in the new Audi TT, a large reconfigurable digital instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel also displays information to the driver.

The T-ROC concept is powered by a conventional 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine, which drives all four wheels via a seven-speed DSG gearbox.
And true to its all terrain intentions, it also features three different driving modes: ‘street', 'off-road' or 'snow'.

It is expected to slot in between the Tiagun and forthcoming Tiguan SUVs when it hits the market next year.
