ESA experimental the IXV spaceplane completes research flight
The European Space Agency (ESA) - February 11, 2015 - An experimental vehicle to develop an autonomous European reentry capability for future reusable space transportation has completed its mission. ESA's Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle flew a flawless reentry and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean just west of the Galapagos islands. The IXV spaceplane lifted off at 13:40 GMT (14:40 CET, 10:40 local time) on 11 February from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana atop a Vega rocket. It separated from Vega at an altitude of 348 km and continued up to 413 km. Reentering from this suborbital path, it recorded a vast amount of data from more than 300 advanced and conventional sensors. As it descended, the five-metre-long, two-tonne craft manoeuvred to decelerate from hypersonic to supersonic speed. The entry speed of 7.5 km/s at an altitude of 120 km created the same conditions as those for a vehicle returning from low Earth orbit. IXV glided through the atmosphere before parachutes deployed to slow the descent further for a safe splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Raytheon: Novel Vision for Patriot
Waltham, MA, USA - February 04, 2015 - Electronically scanned radar, 360 view and a ramped-up range boost legendary defense system. The improvements aim to keep Patriot far ahead of 21st-century airborne threats such as growing arsenals of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and unmanned air vehicles, or UAVs. The radar improves upon the older "space-fed" system, in which a single transmitter generates a large amount of power and pushes it through a transmitting array. The array then acts like a lens and focuses the energy into the battlefield. The AESA radar, by contrast, has multiple, individually powered transmitters behind each element of the radar - a design that allows better control of the beam and helps the radar track multiple targets simultaneously.

World Cancer Day: The Road Ahead for Cervical Cancer Screening
GE Healthcare, February 4, 2015 - Cervical cancer kills over four thousand women a year. Staggeringly, it has been estimated that up to 93 percent of cases could be prevented by screening and vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the virus known to be a cause of cervical cancer. HPV causes warts, which mostly occur on the hands and feet. However, certain strains also affect the genitals. Although most warts are non-cancerous, some strains of HPV are strongly linked to cervical cancer. Despite advances in prevention and control, cervical cancer remains the second most common cause of death from cancer in women. The vast majority of those deaths occur in countries that fall within the World Bank definitions of low- and middle-income countries. Today is World Cancer Day, and it is now more important than ever to raise awareness of the issues surrounding cancer across the world, assess the progress we have made, and look at how far we have yet to go before we can declare cancer beat.
