Munich, Germany - February 23, 2012 - In the SmartSenior research project, in addition to Siemens, there will be a total of 28 partner companies and organizations from research and industry, that will be cooperating under the leadership of Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-Labs). In spring 2012 a three-month-long field test will begin. It is to show whether the technology fits together and whether it is accepted by the users: 35 existing apartments in Potsdam, Germany, will be equipped with a fast Internet connection, the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) Home Gateway as a data hub, and with room sensors.

Smart solutions for the seniors of today and tomorrow.
In spring 2012 the three-month-long field test will begin in Potsdam, Germany: 35 existing apartments will be equipped with a fast Internet connection, the AAL Home Gateway as a data hub, and with room sensors.
The residents are 50 years old and older.
In the Potsdam model apartment, a flat screen showing the SmartSenior interface is in front of the seating area, for example. The set-top box for the audio-video communication via the television, including a camera and speakerphone, is also there. This allows the doctor to detect anomalies, for example, and take immediate action thanks to telemedicine.
The audio-video connection allows the doctor to communicate directly with the patient, for example.

Health check
Using the ECG shirt, seniors can measure their vital data themselves and send it directly to their doctors via the SmartSenior platform. The sensors on the body measure important parameters such as movement or the oxygen content in their blood.
The data is forwarded to a medical center that sends help immediately in an emergency.

The project began in 2009: In nine sub-projects, innovations were developed for integrating communication and services, including assistance in case of emergencies, household safety solutions, systems for social networking, and a telemedicine service center, among others.
 |
Safe thanks to networking
Medical data recording via sensors has other advantages. It can also help prevent car accidents, for example. In the context of the SmartSenior project, BMW is developing an emergency stop assistant. In the scenario, a car driver loses consciousness due to a heart attack, for example.
The emergency stop assistant then automatically assumes control, switches on the hazard lights, and safely steers the car to the highway shoulder. Sensor technologies such as radar, laser scanners, and cameras detect the positions of other drivers.
At the same time, an emergency call with the medical data and precise location of the car is placed to emergency services.

The technical challenge was primarily in the standardization and integration of various systems, from television to smart phones and household appliances to cars.
The objective of such technologies is to increase the quality of life for seniors and help them keep their independence.
Other objectives include lowering the costs of hospital stays, thus reducing the burden on health insurance companies.

Smart sensors provide reliable assistance
With the networked personal scale, data is recorded and sent to the Telemedicine Center of Charité Berlin-Mitte (TMCC) via the AAL Home Gateway.
The data is checked using an automatic diagnostic system and forwarded to the attending doctor.

Telemedicine for seniors at home
The technicians of Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-Labs), which is managing the SmartSenior project, check the data connection of the ECG shirt to the AAL Home Gateway.
Telemedicine could be an alternative not just for seniors in cities, but also for rural regions with a shortage of doctors. In an emergency, the doctor can use telemedicine to instruct patients on how to help themselves until professional assistance arrives.

The set-top box for the audio-video communication via the television, including a camera and speakerphone, is also there.
Sensors on the window frames detect whether the windows are open.
The palm-sized room sensor under the ceiling also collects information about temperature, light, and any gas leakage.
 |
Effective service
The Telemedicine Center of Charité Berlin-Mitte is developing a telemedicine service center that works like a switchboard: The calls are prioritized and forwarded.
Various service levels have their own areas of responsibility.
Caregivers, nurses, and paramedics work on the first level. They are medical intermediaries and need to be trained to communicate appropriately.
Doctors who are highly available and can quickly react are on the second level, along with specialists, who have a high degree of expertise but are not available at all times.
A mobile doctor also exists: equipped with an "electronic notebook," such as a smart phone or tablet PC, he can be underway in the hospital and switch to a stationary workstation if required.

Most sensors operate autonomously and transmit their data to the gateway.
Seniors are considered to be the main users, along with their families, doctors, paramedics, and physical therapists as co-users and secondary users.

Smart solutions for more quality of life
The objective of such technologies is to increase the quality of life for seniors and help them keep their independence.
Other objectives include lowering the costs of hospital stays, thus reducing the burden on health insurance companies.
How such objectives are to be achieved today is to be answered at least in part by the SmartSenior project.

These potential users are to be networked via the SmartSenior service portal and be able to be reached via stationary or mobile devices – both in case of emergency and for regular visits or interactive training, such as during rehabilitation after a fall or stroke.
