Leonid Novitskiy ended day one of the Rally Dakar in first place in his orange MINI ALL4 Racing, before Stéphane Peterhansel replaced the Russian as the overnight leader in his green MINI on Monday. Today it was Krzysztof Holowczyc's turn to shine in a red MINI. The second fastest time of the day saw Krzysztof Holowczyc move to the top of the overall standings.

Only team-mate Nani Roma clocked a faster time over the 208 timed kilometres between San Rafael and San Juan, winning the stage with a 1:09 minute lead over Krzysztof.

Meanwhile, Stéphane Peterhansel, who led the field for over half of the stage, was twice forced to stop and change a tyre.

"It is frustrating, but that kind of thing happens sometimes," said
Stéphane upon arriving at the bivouac with the seventh fastest time for the third stage.

Ricardo drove into a mud hole just one kilometre from the end of the stage, having clocked the fifth fastest intermediate time of the stage shortly beforehand.
