HP today announced that its board of directors has appointed Meg Whitman as president and chief executive officer.
In addition,
Ray Lane has moved from non-executive chairman to executive chairman of the board of directors, and the board intends to appoint a lead independent director promptly.

These leadership appointments are
effective immediately and follow the decision that Léo Apotheker step down as president and chief executive officer and resign as a director of the company.

Speaking on behalf of the board, Lane said,
“We very much appreciate Léo’s efforts and his service to HP since his appointment last year. The board believes that the job of the HP CEO now requires additional attributes to successfully execute on the company’s strategy. Meg Whitman has the right operational and communication skills and leadership abilities to deliver improved execution and financial performance.”

With David Packard, William R. (Bill) Hewlett was co-founder of Hewlett-Packard Company.
Hewlett resigned as president in 1977, and retired as chief executive officer in 1978 in accordance with his previously announced plans for management succession within HP.
He then served as chairman of HP's Executive Committee until 1983, when he became vice chairman of the HP board of directors. In 1987, he was named director emeritus, and he served in that position until his death on January 12, 2001.

Previously, Ms. Whitman served as President and Chief Executive Officer of eBay Inc., from 1998 to March 2008.
Prior to joining eBay, Ms. Whitman held executive-level positions at Hasbro Inc., a toy company, FTD, Inc., a floral products company, The Stride Rite Corporation, a footwear company, The Walt Disney Company, an entertainment company, and Bain & Company, a consulting company.
Ms. Whitman also serves as a director of The Procter & Gamble Company and Zipcar, Inc.
