Traditional paper based ways of documenting and delivering architectural projects could not capture Gehry's innovative designs.

Gehry built a team of technologists and practitioners which initiated new ways of thinking about architecture and building, using advanced 3D aerospace technologies to design, document and go directly from design to construction without intermediate paper documentation.
In parallel, Gehry’s practice pursed innovations to project delivery to establish more collaborative project teams, conducting practice through integrated 3D project data.

Gehry Technologies combined PLM's 3D design and management capabilities with project experience gained with using Dassault Systemes' 3D solutions over the years to create Digital Project, a CATIA-based building information modeling (BIM) system.

A platform which combines Dassault Systemes' solutions and dedicated software developed by Gehry Technologies specifically for building industry systems, Digital Project generates a single digital model which can be accessed and modified by all teams participating in the same building projects.

Lou Ruvo Brain Institute

The Lou Ruvo Brain Institute is a health care facility specializing in research and care for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, ALS, and Memory Disorders.

The facility will have approximately 31,000 square feet of clinical care and research space; and nearly 7,000 square feet will be dedicated to the Museum of the Mind.

Project team members used Digital Project to create a 3D building model which allowed fabricators, erectors, and constructors to view building components layer by layer with a 360 degree viewpoint for exceptional detail, thereby removing ambiguity, ensuring design intent realization, supporting accurate fabrication and construction, and reducing change orders and requests for information.

Gehry Technologies Receives AIA TAP BIM Award

The American Institute of Architects Recognizes Gehry Technologies’ advancements in BIM-driven building delivery processes for Swire Properties’ One Island East Tower in Hong Kong.

– May 15 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced Gehry Technologies is among the 2008 recipients of the prestigious Building Information Model (BIM) Awards, given by AIA Technology in the Architectural Practice Knowledge Community (TAP).
Gehry Technologies (GT) received the award for “Design / Delivery Process Innovation Using BIM” for One Island East, a commercial office tower in Hong Kong.

Swire Properties Ltd., the owner of One Island East, drove the use of Building Information Modeling and Building Lifecycle Management on this project to reduce cost and construction time, increase efficiency, and reduce waste throughout the design, construction, and facilities management processes.

“One Island East was one of the most substantial implementations of virtual 3D building lifecycle information management yet implemented. The project set a new standard for the use of BIM on construction projects worldwide. Particularly in the area of MEP coordination, collaborative work methods and construction process simulation, this project has shown the substantial savings that are now available through the implementation of new technologies and working methods such as those provided by GT,” commented Martin Riese, Managing Director of GT Asia.

“The key ingredient was the owner’s leadership of the process, but this award also recognizes the work of many dedicated project team collaborators. Gehry Technologies would not have been recognized with this award, for The One Island East project, without the dedication and commitment of numerous organizations such as Swire, Wong & Ouyang, Arup, L&B, Meinhardt, Gammon, Balfour Beatty, Gartner and a number of others.“

This owner-driven BIM implementation combined the entire traditional design and construction teams into one virtual 3D building design and construction information management process using Digital Project™ software from GT.
As BIM consultants to the owner, the GT Asia team enabled and facilitated a higher degree of information integration and exchange between all members of the design and construction teams, the supply chain, and the client.

Y.M. Leung, One Island East Project Manager for Swire Properties, described the benefits of using Digital Project:
“The project was scheduled for single-phased occupation in March 2008, aided by a pioneering Digital Project management system that facilitated collaboration across all disciplines of the development process so that the completion date would be achieved. This in turn reduced construction waste significantly. Also underscoring Swire Properties’ environmental protection values was a paperless bidding process.”

“Digital Project provided three-dimensional information on the buildability of the design during the planning stage, and therefore minimized potential abortive works due to clashes, subsequent waste generation, as well as our cost and time.
The system was effective in detecting 'clashes' between building elements during the design stage, and 4D construction process simulations helped to optimize construction sequencing.
The internet-based, 3D project information database provided the stakeholders, project team, and entire project supply chain with instant, real-time visibility into the entire building process.
The project is now at the completion stage and Occupation Permit has been obtained ahead of schedule.”

“This distinction underscores Gehry Technologies’s efforts to pursue industry advancements through technology and comprehensive process change,” said Stuart Jacobson, CEO of Gehry Technologies.
