ABB to strengthen Indonesia's power grid and support economic growth 2018.05.09

Zurich, Switzerland - May 08, 2018 - ABB has won an order to supply gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to PLN, Indonesia's state-owned power utility. The GIS will facilitate reliable supply of electricity and can be safely operated in confined spaces and harsh environments, controlling the network and protecting it from power outages. As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, demand for electricity in Indonesia continues to grow. The government aims to have all households connected to the nation's electricity grid by 2025 and is executing an ambitious program to add 35,000 megawatts (MW) of new power generation capacity.

• Compact Gas Insulated switchgear to enable supply of more power and enhance grid reliability

ABB has won an order to supply gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to PLN, Indonesia’s state-owned power utility.

The GIS will facilitate reliable supply of electricity and can be safely operated in confined spaces and harsh environments, controlling the network and protecting it from power outages.

ABB inaugurated a new manufacturing facility for high-voltage switchgear in Tangerang, on the out-skirts of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta.
This is part of ABB’s continued footprint expansion in the country in-cluding the establishment of a new factory for medium-voltage products in 2015 at the same location.

As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, demand for electricity in Indonesia continues to grow.

Gas-insulated switchgear ELK-04 up to 170 kV.
The gas-insulated switchgear ELK-04 is the ideal solution for reliable energy supply up to a rated voltage of 170 kV, a rated normal current up to 4000 A, and a rated short circuit current up to 63 kA.
Based on a few building blocks with standardized dimensions, its space saving and modular design offers a small footprint and easy operation at high performance ratings.
The ELK-04 offers a high level of flexibility for optimizing substation layouts.

As part of the order, ABB will design, supply and commission 150-kilovolt (kV) GIS for 10 substations in the greater Jakarta area, Western Java, East Java and Sulawesi.

GIS technology provides a reliable solution with a compact footprint that allows up to 90 percent space saving compared to conventional air-insulated switchgear.

This enables substations to be built within urban areas where land is scarce and costly, while preserving the aesthetics of the cityscape.
