Gartner Report: IBM Named Marketshare Leader 2013.04.13

Armonk, N.Y., USA - April 08, 2013 - IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that based on Gartner's definition of the application infrastructure and middleware market, IBM has once again been named the overall marketshare leader. The rankings are based on total worldwide revenue for 2012 and marks 12 consecutive years of leadership for IBM. IBM was the leading software vendor with 30.9 percent marketshare, nearly double that of its closest competitor. The worldwide application infrastructure and middleware software market grew five percent to $20 billion, according to Gartner.

IBM THINK Exhibit at Epcot
On February 20, 2013, IBM inaugurated its IBM THINK exhibit at INNOVENTIONS West at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort.
The exhibit shows visitors how technology and systematic inquiry lead to progress and innovation.

Report: IBM Named Marketshare Leader in Application Infrastructure and Middleware Software for 12 Consecutive Years

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that based on Gartner's definition of the application infrastructure and middleware market, IBM has once again been named the overall marketshare leader.

The rankings are based on total worldwide revenue for 2012 and marks 12 consecutive years of leadership for IBM.

Wynne, Srinivasan and Samuel Blum, who receives the award posthumously, were honored with the country's most prestigious award given to leading innovators for technological achievement, for their discovery of a new form of laser surgery that enabled LASIK and PRK eye surgery.
Today more than 25 million people worldwide have benefited from the procedure.
This is the tenth time IBM has received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

According to the Gartner Inc. report
(Market Share: All Software Markets, Worldwide, 2012, Colleen Graham, et al, March 29, 2013), IBM was the leading software vendor with 30.9 percent marketshare, nearly double that of its closest competitor.

IBM, Excel Medical and UCLA tackle big data in efforts to uncover preventative treatments for patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
Dr. Xiao Hu, associate professor at the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery, analyzes brain wave data to predict the rise of deadly brain pressure as part of a National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke study, Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in Los Angeles, Calif., USA.
Knowing in advance that brain pressure could potentially rise in TBI patients gives doctors more time to prevent further brain damage or death.
The Centers for Disease Control estimates 1.7 million people in the United States sustain TBIs every year.

Besides its overall lead, the Gartner report also recognizes that IBM is growing in the initiatives that serve as key underpinnings to IBM higher value growth initiatives including Smarter Planet, Big Data, Security, Mobility and Cloud

Using Data to Drive Online Sales
Zoran Lemut., CIO of Slovenia's leading pharmaceutical company Kemofarmacijia, increased his company's online sales orders by 30 percent after gaining valuable insight on his customers' buying preferences.
According to Lemut, "using cloud technologies and IBM analytics, we are now able to offer online promotions and display ads that accurately reflect when and what our customers need."

For example, IBM was named the number one vendor in Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) software with 28.6 percent share; almost triple that of its closest competitor.
